School-wide SOAR Recognition

Eagle SOAR Celebrations

Woodland celebrates in a school-wide community meeting once a month. This assembly is to help build community in gathering together to recognize great things happening at Woodland. For the celebrations at the end of each trimester, following the assembly, scholars are recognized for their hard work by choosing a fun activity to enjoy with peers.

SOAR Hotline

Woodland’s SOAR hotline phone will nest in the main office for scholars to contact their families to share an amazing achievement. Teachers may invite scholars to call a parent using the SOAR hotline when they have demonstrated outstanding achievement, growth, or choices in the classroom. Teachers should not send more than 2-3 scholars at a time.

SOAR Slips

All Woodland staff members are encouraged to recognize SOARing behaviors with SOAR slips. These slips can be given to scholars when they are caught doing positive behaviors and/or showing the character trait of the month. Which positive behavior should you be giving one for? Scholars should not be recognized for expected behaviors (unless demonstrating expected behaviors is an achievement for a particular scholar). (i.e. Students should be walking in the hall quietly.) SOAR slips are to recognize unexpected positive behaviors. Here are some examples of unexpected positive behaviors:

  • Helping a scholar who is injured or needs assistance without being asked or prompted.

  • Turning in a valuable item that someone lost.

  • Holding the door for someone.

  • Respectfully standing up for someone who is being picked on.

  • Picking up trash outside or inside without being asked.

  • Asking someone to play who does not have anyone to play with.

  • Picking up equipment without being asked.

  • Any other kind of SOAR behavior (Safe, Own our actions, Act with leadership, Resourceful) a scholar does that either stands out or was not requested by an adult.

We want our scholars to be able to recognize others also. If scholars see something exemplary happen, they can tell a staff member so the unexpected SOAR behavior can be recognized. Once a scholar receives a SOAR slip, he/she should deliver it to the office, write her/his name and teacher’s name, cut it in half, deposit part in the SOAR box, and take the other half home to share. Periodically names will be drawn from the SOAR slips to have a special lunch with the principal.

SUBstantial Award

Classrooms will be given this reward for repeatedly showing SOARing behavior when their class has a substitute guest teacher. A certificate will be given for each day a class earns a SUBstantial Award and one class will be drawn each month to enjoy a SUB lunch.

SOAR Scholars of the week

Students exemplifying SOAR expectations and going above and beyond will have a chance to be recognized by way of SOAR Scholar of the week, where teachers can nominate qualifying students to be highlighted!
