Woodland's PBIS Philosophy, Framework

and Flowcharts

Woodland Elementary is committed to maintaining a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning community.

We believe:

  • Every member of our learning community is expected to act with integrity.

  • The focus of our scholar behavior system is to teach, encourage, and promote effective decision making, self-regulation, and positive behavior.

  • Realistic and relevant consequences will help guide decision-making.

  • In taking responsibility for one’s actions, making the wrong right, and learning from one’s choices.

  • In working to resolve conflicts, a restorative and empathetic approach is not only best for the one that has done the harm, but also for the entire community.

Our vision is a caring community of disciplined members whose words and actions consistently reflect SOAR; choosing Safe, Owning our actions, Acting with leadership, and being Resourceful. Our behavior plan is based on a diamond of intervention (a.k.a. Multi-Tiered Systems of Support, which is based on the Response to Intervention model). Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) is a three-tiered system to support scholar learning and behavior.  The three tiers represent the level of support scholars need in order to master the learning or behavioral targets.

All scholars will receive the core instruction at Tier 1, as this is the foundation of Woodland’s philosophy. This core instruction includes the following proactive strategies: being explicitly taught SOAR expectations and skills, practicing SOAR expected behaviors and skills, and using ENVOY and Responsive Classroom approaches. In addition, Woodland’s Tier 1 core includes pro-active strategies to re-teach expected behaviors and to recognize those scholars who model SOAR expectations: problem solving and restoration, team communication (i.e. Communicator), SOAR pride postcards, phone calls, SOAR slips, Scholar of the Week, and SUBstantial awards.

In differentiating to meet the learning needs of individual scholars’ regarding expected behaviors, Woodland has Tier 2 and 3 strategies to both reinforce and reteach, and honor and recognize. Tier 2 interventions are intended for the students who require supplemental and small group support, or recognize those students who exemplify SOAR expectations in leadership roles (i.e. Student Council, School Patrols, etc.). Tier 3 interventions are for the small percentage (approximately 5%) who either require intensive, 1:1 instruction to master behavioral expectations or are individuals being honored for exemplary behavior (i.e. Investment in Youth Award).
